Notes (week 12) – CE 0.90 beta 2

ArrangeBy_menu There’s been pretty nice progress. Many bug fixes and I added an "Arrange By" item in the background menu. I’m still working with the scripting engine and scripts to update SVN log and SVN download automatically. Anyway, I’ll keep it short this week. Here’s the download:

*** Update ***
There is a bug in this release that might crash CE when you close it. To "fix" it, disable the auto save from session properties. I’ll release new version this weeks Friday that will fix this issue.

CubicExplorer 0.90 beta 2 (0.90.0.1002)
Installer (2.1MB)
Zip (2.0MB)

I added image to the post showing the “Arrange By” item. You can use it to sort files by name, size, date… etc.

Translation Bugs:

1. At session editor dialog, “Save/Edit Settings” & “Load this session on startup.” are not being replaced by translated strings.

2. I have noticed many missed string-replace when I change Language and I do not restart the application (ex word “Session” at File/Edit Menu Bar). It is not so important.

3. Internal Text Editor Translation…

4. “Close” button translation in About Dialog.

SMB Bugs:

1. To browse an SMB Directory I have firstly open Windows Explorer(I have replaced WE with another shell so I use it only for this reason) and visit an SMB Place and then browse SMB Dirs from CE (or firefox). It looks like that SMB/NetBios Engine have to be loaded somehow.

If I do not open WE nothing happens at CE when I try open a SMB Dir.

2. Too much time… when I firstly open a SMB. Thats happening because CE tries to find/check recursively the given SMB Path and then find it in “Directory Panel”.

Is it possible to add an option to visit a SMB directly without first find where it is located (windows api acts too slow trying to resolve hostnames) ?

You may add a “CE Network Places” panel and user will add his favorite net places. Then he will open them directly from panel. The network tree will show only subdirs of each network place and not where it belongs to.

A not so good solution for the moment is to use network drives. It skips hostname resolve…

Suggestions:

1. I would like to see a Ftp/Sftp/Scp Client.

2. Ability to add custom shortcuts at toolbars. ex. “Launch VNC” like “Open Command Prompt” button.

3. When I do right click on Text Document, add option “Edit with internet editor”.

4. Add support for external Text Editor & Image Viewer.

5. F3 Key, adds/removes a “find file” panel upper/onleft to current directory, similar to Kde or Windows Explorer. If it is difficult, you may use F3 Key to act just as “find file” shortcut for current directory.

6. Archive files transparent browsing.

7. I open QuickView Panel, I select a video file and I click play. Then I select other video file but QuickView does not change to the new one… I have to stop playing, deselect and then select other video (or mp3, whatever).

8. Add “set as desktop wallpaper” on Image File, right click, or as little button in QuickView Panel.

9. PDF QuickView? I ask to much :)

Thanks for this great explorer application, it is by far the best I have seen.

If you need any debugging help, mail me. I use CE all day long :)

one more suggestion…

add “Information” Panel for selected item (file attributes for files, network status for connections, etc)

Hi, and thanks for the extensive feedback.

I added those bugs in todo list (#69, #70). About the suggestions:

1,2,4,5,6. These are planned. I don’t yet know the schedules though.

3. Added in todo list (#71)

7. I’ll have to add more options on how the QuickView behaves. Some like it to keep playing, some like it to switch. Added in todo list (#72).

8. Good idea. Again, the right click menu is a matter of taste so there has to be toggle options. I have plans to make the context menu customizable which would let you add all the items you want there. I added this in todo item #72 for now.

9. The QuickView is going to have a plugin support at some point. PDF is one of the first plugins I’ll make.

10. Added the Information panel in todo list (#73).

I don’t know if it’s just my system or what but whenever I shutdown windows I have to close CubicExplorer because it’s “not responding”.

The latest beta, it has occured in the first beta, the last alpha (alpha 5?), and I think the regular version as well.

Hmm, are you using any 3rd party shell extensions? Also what Windows are you using?

In earlier versions there was a bug that caused this type of behavior but it’s been fixed a while ago. Everything seems to work fine in my systems.

Windows XP, RAR shell extension for seeing the details and compression ratio of a compressed archive, and a Comic Book extension, for thumbnailing of comic book archives (CDisplayEx). That’s all I know off the top of my head. I’ll check and report on beta 3 when time permits.
