Notes (weeks 49-4) – Open source CE

Well, not yet at work. It seems that the recovery is taking longer than I thought. I’ve been updating my working environment and introduced some new things like the project server which is pretty much hosting my entire life thanks to eGroupWare. These changes hopefully will balance the work load and prevent meltdowns in the future. The server is up and running. Reusing materials and parts resulted total cost to be 0€ :) .

FrontBackInside

Initially I was planning to host CE’s code in my own server, but after thinking it some more, there’s not really any reason to do so. There are many free hosting options out there so why not let professionals handle those servers. After reviewing different hosts, I ended up choosing Google Code Hosting. They have fast servers/connections and proper backups in many geolocations.

I have uploaded all code to the server and it’s now available. There’s still a lot’s of cleaning to do in the code and folder structures. Also building instructions should be added. I chose Mozilla Public License (MPL) as the license. Anyway, from now on CE’s code will live here:

Very nice! :-)
Happy to see you posting here again, Marco.
I hope open sourcing CE will give it’s development a well deserved boost. And I also hope that you alone won’t stop writing code for CE.

Congrats for the new server. :-)

Great :)

I personally do not use Delphi so I can’t help but it is looking good.

That’s a nice PC build there. Looks like it could be pretty quiet. Although that open frame PSU looks a little scary.

@Billy Buerger
Yeah, it’s pretty quiet. I’m used to work with line voltage so it’s ok. Been shocked about 5-6 times over the years so I’m pretty careful these days.

@Tommy
Hope so too. I will continue to work with CE but any help is welcome.

Finally open source. Thank you very much! :)
But to my disappointment I was not able to compile it (i tried it the whole day). Better to discuss it in the forum, but can you please give some informations about your environment? Delphi version, library versions (perhaps you can provide them), …?! Would be very glad.

@TippiX

I added compiling instructions and some components in the repository. I’m using BDS2006. I haven’t tested compiling with any other version but I see no reason why it wouldn’t work.

At the moment there is quite a lot of 3rd party components needed. Hopefully that list can shrink in the future. Also I’m hoping to remove all design time requirements so that there wouldn’t be any need to install components in IDE.

I added a Development board in the forum. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
