Notes (weeks 14-?) – Rehabilitation break

It’s been quite interesting few weeks. I finally found a core reason for the problems I’ve been having my entire life. It’s called Asperger syndrome (wikipedia). I’ve been going through my past by looking at it from Asperger’s point of view, it finally makes some sense. The diagnose is not official yet, but I’ll probably go to neurological tests to make it so.

Personally I don’t think Asperger’s is a sickness/condition you need/can cure. It’s just a different way of looking at the world. Our brains just work differently than most peoples, which is not a bad thing necessarily. For example, I have a photographic memory in some situations. On the other hand, sometimes my memory works very poorly.

My next mission is to learn how to cope with the negative effects of this condition. For example, the breaks I’ve been having with CubicExplorer’s development are directly caused by those negative effects. The goal is to maximize all positive effects and minimize negative. Positive effects include logical thinking, pin point accurate concentration, looking at problems from different perspectives, good memory…etc. Those abilities fit perfectly into programming, that’s why I like coding so much. And that’s why I’m very exited and positive about the future.

What happens next and what about CubicExplorer?

I finally got a temporary disability pension (lasting to the end of 2010). It’s quite difficult thing to get here in Finland (it took 2 years and 4 doctor statements for me). This means I can finally focus on solving these issues without pressure. It also means I have to take distance to this site and CE. You can think of it like rebooting your brain.

However, when I’m not feeling any pressure, I can be very productive and I’ll most likely will work with CE because I’m very exited about it’s future. I’ve started polishing CE 1.0 and hope to release it before summer. Also there will be snapshot releases as soon as I add new bug fixes or features. However, it’s also possible that there isn’t much progress on CE during this year, at the moment it’s impossible to say how things move.

Another change is these “weekly” notes I’m writing. I have to stop them for a while also and write only if there is something to report. However, I might start writing to the blog section more about non-CE related stuff, not sure yet.

Anyway, the way I see it, this break is a very positive thing for CE. I’m looking forward to keep building CE and to make it a program it deserves to be.

Have a great spring everyone! Snow is melting and floods are subsiding here in Finland :) .

That’s great news! knowing where your health problems come from is a great step. I wish you all the best too. By the way, great pictures! but if snow is melting now, I don’t want to think how your winters are… Here in Barcelona (Spain) we’re wearing just a shirt this week. ;)

Hi,

My son has Asperger syndrome as well so I know a bit how it feels like. He is 16 years old now but knowing that you are able to become a programmer/developer gives me some hope that someday somehow he will be able to be independent.

Keep up the good work. Do you mean if I keep in touch with you via Facebook. In any case, I will send you an invite .. .:-)

It’s interesting to hear your story and I felt sorry about your problem. I started using CE a couple of days ago and found that I like it. It’s a cute tool and I hope you may carry on the development project. Best wishes!

I also think that it is a big step to have a greater understanding of the way your mind works. Your work on CE is very much appreciated. Keep up the great work, and continue to take care of yourself.

Marko, CE is doing great, and can coast for a long time without any problem, or you can work on it at your own pace as the spirit moves you. The important thing is to take time for yourself and attend to your needs. I’ll lift some prayers for you, for rest, clarity and restoration. Be blessed.

hey, hope all is well. it’s not such a bad thing at times (aspergers), but can be a lonely and hard to understand place. most importantly is that it’s ‘acceptance’ that’s required, and that you learn to work ‘with’ yourself, rather than against. it’ll feel like people don’t understand you greatly, and that’s you’re giving yourself a label, that sorta thing.

just know that we’re different from most, see things differently. it’s a blessing, once you know what it is.

as always, keep up the good work.

keep blogging! :)

Hi Marko,
I’ve been roadtesting a lot of file manager programs and have found yours to be the best – especially the way it looks in Windows 7. It has a super clean interface – which is a major attraction – and I love the way it previews graphic and movie files, even Photoshop. The bookmark feature was just what I was looking for. You have achieved a lot with this fine software and I will be recommending it to others. We wish you all the best in understanding your condition and turning to your advantage.
Refresh and take care of yourself
Best Regards
Chris

Markov congratulations!

First, the point of view (clear, positive, going forward) that you have about it your actual situation, but I’m sure, you can deal with it! :) :) :)
Second, CD is a tool grouped in the box with the best tool like that!
finally, relax; all hasn’t be a “hardcore perfection” all the time. The important is feeling happy inside :D :D

PD. Nice shots!

Hi, Marko, your work is very important to us, all of CE users but your health is a number one concern, play it cool..your attitude is positive and that helps….it’s good to hear you are dealing with it and that you are optimistic.
only the best wishes,
Aka

Hi Marko. You need to take time to take care of your health above all. My wife was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder last year and it has been very hard on her. However once she accepted it for what it was life has gotten easier. Just keep going slowly and things will work themselves out. Our prayers are with you. Once you heal Cubic Explorer will be there to continue. Until then just tinker with it if you feel like it. May your health continue to improve.

Don’t worry now about CE. It’s still better than Windows Explorer in its current state ;)

Hi Marko,

Looking for an alternative for WE I stumbled upon CE, it’s great! But even more important was your post. It’s so recognisable, all the abilities your mentioning! I only auto diagnosed myself a few months ago. Like you said, it’s not a matter of curing, it’s a matter of recognition & handling. We’re not less, but have an other way of looking at things. I hope to hear more from you on how you’re maximizing the positives and minimizing the negatives.

Keep on the good work!!!

@ New version, momo & nor: Don’t push it, be patient. Better wait a bit longer and get a good update.

hi Marko, how’s going?
is summer coming to Finland as well?

26.

@Tommy
It’s going well, summer has been here for few weeks already.

I’ve been mainly filming, making music and building physical things for a change. Did little bit design work for CubicCore but no coding. I still have long way to go but the progress has been quite steady. I’m planning to write some notes in week or two.

I have been helping children with special needs and their families. I met some parents who have Asperger syndrome and have been helping them. I agree that Asperger is not a disorder; it only refers to some differences at experiencing the world both physically and socially. I have been helping a father to cope better at his work and also to relate better to his wife. If you think I may be able to help you, please feel free to e-mail me.

Did I sent my comment? I was trying to correct the last two sentences.
It should be read: I have been successfully helped a father through e-mail correspondences; now the man can cope better with situations at his workplace and to relate better to his wife. Feel free to e-mail me, perhaps I could give you some sound advices.
